Blogger Help – How To Beat The Instagram Algorithm

Things are constantly changing in the blogging world and its growing increasingly harder to engage and up your following with people who are genuinely interested in what you have to offer. One of the biggest changes that us bloggers have faced in the last year is the Instagram algorithm!! Its infuriating, we lose more followers than we gain and it can be a real struggle for any of our most recent posts to be seen, basically its completely fucked us and we’re constantly complaining about it! Instagram has been my hardest platform to grow, in the beginning followers were flocking in, then the algorithm changed and suddenly my followers stopped growing for months, and months and months! I’ve also been target to many of those who play that unfair follow/unfollow game… yeah! More recently though my numbers have been on the rise and I finally feel like I know a bit more about Instagram and how to grow a successful following #Praisethesonofmaryandjoseph! Luckily for you guys I wanted to share all of my useful Instagram knowledge (albeit limited) to save you wasting precious blogging time on an otherwise useless platform!! Lets go…

Theme Your Feed

To theme or not to theme, this is one that is constantly thrown up in the air for debate and it couldn’t be any more divided!! Personally my Instagram has grown bigger and faster having a structured theme to it, something aesthetically pleasing, nice to look at – after all isn’t that what makes Pinterest so successful?? People lust over pretty photos, so following through with a theme will make your Instagram look really desirable. Yeah it might not seem natural but we choose what we want people to see on our social media platforms anyway! If you have a niche such as travel or food you’ll already have a sort-of-theme, but its up to you how you chose to shoot your photos and what order you upload them in so that your feed doesn’t become too cluttered!

Symmetry breakfast is a great example of this, most of you would have heard of them, they’re a food related account with a feed that is so aesthetically pleasing you could scroll through for days! They aren’t the only ones, other accounts with a running theme have also done incredibly well for themselves and I find myself always lusting over them and re-visiting!

With my blog being lifestyle orientated I can post pictures of pretty much anything I like but this can make it even trickier sometimes! I try to stick to a white theme – I like looking at bright white, monochrome photos so this is how I aim for my feed to look, I’ll add pops of colour here and there but the more clear it looks for me, the better!

Join Instagram Pods

There has been a little controversy related to Instagram pods recently, some people argue that they are inorganic and just as bad as using bots, others like me believe thats pure bullshit because they promote organic, natural growth and enable those who wouldn’t normally be able to find your feed, find it! Instagram pods are private groups of bloggers that let each other know when they have uploaded. Everyone in the group then likes and comments on the new post thus beating the new algorithm and giving your feed a chance to get noticed via hashtags, search and friends of friends! Pods took me a while to get use to, I’d joined a few in the past but just couldn’t keep up with them day to day which triggered my leaving! I’m now more use keeping up with my socials so I’ve made pods of my own as well as joining others and would absolutely recommend being in more than one at a time. Since using pods I’ve grown in followers much quicker and I believe you’re more likely to grow in the amount of followers you have this way. Support other bloggers and they’ll support you!

Check Your Hashtags

If you use a bunch of hashtags when posting a photo you should check that none of them are banned or broken! Instagram hashtags are the most important tool when using the app, they allow you to be discovered and when you use the right hashtags relevant to your content they can become quite fruitful – Its good to note here that with the new algorithm smaller accounts are almost impossible to be discovered with the hashtag method alone and thats where Pods come in! – However some hashtags are ‘broken’ so they do not allow your photo to show up in their feed, Instagram also has banned hashtags to protect users from what can be pornographic or inappropriate content since there are users of all ages! This can result in your photo not showing up in any of your chosen hashtags, so be careful and always check your hashtags trashing any that might hinder your growth!

Find Relevant Accounts

Find those bigger, more well known accounts and users that relate to your feed/what you upload. Leave a genuine comment on one of their posts instead of just liking and tag any brands in your photos that are relevant i.e – If you post an ootd, tag the brands you are wearing! As my feed can consist of a lot of beauty related content I like to comment on quite a few makeup accounts, this is where you’ll find like minded Instagrammers that genuinely dig your content and want to follow you. Doing this is great for growth and making the extra effort to comment on a post will show a little of your personality too so make sure any comments you leave represent you well!

With these tips in mind and making a conscious effort to grow your Instagram you’ll soon be on your way to reaching a larger audience and growing the following you deserve!

They are quite often the most obvious reason your posts fail on Instagram and its really over looked too!

I love Instagram as a visual platform but I hate their algorithm and the people who do the follow/unfollow game. Having a theme on your page definitely helps in getting more likes.

    • francescaferrarinelson@yahoo.co.uk April 24, 2017 / 6:39 pm

Yeah I think its becoming an issue for so many of us now!

What a great post, I’ve never found Hashtags to be that effective for me, but I’ll be trying to up my game with them I think!

    • francescaferrarinelson@yahoo.co.uk April 24, 2017 / 6:41 pm

There is a new thing that has come to light over the last few days about a shadow ban that actually bans your images and its linked to hashtags!

    • francescaferrarinelson@yahoo.co.uk April 24, 2017 / 8:41 pm

Awwh glad to hear there are still those that love it! Its a great platform!

  7. Susanna | Ordinality April 24, 2017 / 8:38 pm

This is such an informative post! I suck at Instagram; I can never hold on to a theme long enough for it to actually become a theme, and I’m too lazy for my research. BUT one of these days…

    • francescaferrarinelson@yahoo.co.uk April 24, 2017 / 8:42 pm

Hahaha I do love a good theme I have to admit!

  8. Sarah Bailey April 24, 2017 / 8:43 pm

Instagram certainly can be frustrating, especially with all of the algorithm changes and the follow/unfollow game so many seem to want to play. SymmetryBreakfast has such a beautiful feed!

    • francescaferrarinelson@yahoo.co.uk April 25, 2017 / 9:52 am

right? I love their feed so much!

  10. Rhian Westbury April 25, 2017 / 9:19 am

I’ve had some issues with instagram hashtags recently so I definitely need to look into this. I’ve actually never joined an Instagram pod but it’s definitely something to look into x

    • francescaferrarinelson@yahoo.co.uk April 25, 2017 / 9:54 am

Yeah hastags have been a real issue lately for myself too!! Pods are great something to look into!

  11. Rosie April 25, 2017 / 11:59 am

My scatter brain will not let me do a theme. I just can’t do it!

  12. Ana De- Jesus April 25, 2017 / 1:00 pm

I have been on Instagram a year and a half now and in the beginning my following shot up pretty quickly and it took me no time to get to 1 K. But then since then the algorithim began to change and this how ‘unfollow’ follow business really made me lose a lot of followers. Now though I managed to get 300 new followers in the space of a few days because I was featured. It all depends I think, pods are a good way of maintaining following I agree x

    • francescaferrarinelson@yahoo.co.uk April 25, 2017 / 3:19 pm

Yeah exposure is really good just doesn’t happen very often unfortunatley!

  13. Tanya April 25, 2017 / 2:23 pm

Great post and could not be more needed right now. I’m in a comment pod and I don’t see why people get so offended by them, they’re usually a group of like minded people who you would tend to like their photos anyway. Great tips

    • francescaferrarinelson@yahoo.co.uk April 25, 2017 / 3:19 pm

Thats exactly my thinking with pods!

  14. Stephanie Merry April 25, 2017 / 3:57 pm

I love instagram. I’m not huge on any kind of social media but instagram is definitely the one I use most, has grown quickest and gets most engagement. I’ve tried all of these except the theme – my instagram reflects my blog which reflects my life which is a bit all over the place!

    • francescaferrarinelson@yahoo.co.uk April 26, 2017 / 9:18 am

Awwwh I love the reason behind that though!

  16. Sarah April 25, 2017 / 8:17 pm

Thank you SO much for this! I am fairly new to Instagram (I know, I know), and truth is I’m struggling a bit!

    • francescaferrarinelson@yahoo.co.uk April 26, 2017 / 9:19 am

Don’t worry I think everyone is right now!!

  17. Sally Akins April 26, 2017 / 11:48 am

Instagram used to be so easy, but since they started using the algorithm I’m finding it much harder to grow my following. I definitely need to put some of these tips into action!

    • francescaferrarinelson@yahoo.co.uk April 26, 2017 / 12:12 pm

I know right its getting trickier and trickier!

  18. Rebecca Smith April 26, 2017 / 5:59 pm

Yes it really does help, helped me out a great deal!

  20. Dannii April 26, 2017 / 7:12 pm

Lots of great tips here. IG is always banning new hashtags, so it can be hard to keep up with it all.

    • francescaferrarinelson@yahoo.co.uk April 26, 2017 / 8:03 pm

It really can I was oblivious to it for so long!

  21. Beccy Kiernan April 26, 2017 / 7:41 pm

I’ll be honest I don’t give instagram enough attention but its something I do need to work on, therefore these tips are very useful!

  23. Kira April 26, 2017 / 9:58 pm

I have been in one pod before, although I didn’t realise they had a name, and I find it so difficult to keep up with. If things were more relaxed and I would do it when I can then sure I’d love to join more pods 😀

    • francescaferrarinelson@yahoo.co.uk April 26, 2017 / 11:29 pm

They can become difficult to keep up with at times all the pods i’m in are pretty relaxed though so if we can’t be on there straight away we catch uo when possible!

  24. emma white April 27, 2017 / 10:02 am

  26. Jenni April 27, 2017 / 9:47 pm

Fab tips, my Instagram is a mix of family and lifestyle photos. I join Instagram pods and instant threads but I am a little worried about the shadow banning talk x

    • francescaferrarinelson@yahoo.co.uk April 28, 2017 / 10:19 am

Yes I just wrote a post about that too!! Its up!

  27. Lubka Henry April 29, 2017 / 7:08 pm

If I’m no active on IG for a couple of days, I notice a drop of my followers. There are so many people who play the follow/unfollow game – it’s just the way.
I tend to follow all of the tips you’ve mentioned and some of my posts get noticed pretty well, others… not so much. I guess it depends on the time of the day I’ve posted them and lots of other things too.

    • francescaferrarinelson@yahoo.co.uk April 29, 2017 / 8:29 pm

Well thats a shame these tips have helped me millions but it your account could be shadowbanned so you might want to check that out too!

  28. Emily Leary April 30, 2017 / 11:19 pm

Good tips! I stick almost exclusively to food on my IG now, and have noticed that helps a lot. I don’t theme as much as the gorgeous accounts you’ve used as examples though (including your own) – I’m just not that disciplined!

    • francescaferrarinelson@yahoo.co.uk May 1, 2017 / 10:35 am

Awwh thank you! Hahaha you know what its all down to personal preference I just prefer mine to look really simple my private one however is as cluttered as anything!

  29. Ella May 15, 2017 / 9:25 am

I just stumbled across your blog and this is really helpful. I’ve very recently set up my blog and I’m so confused on how to get started! How do you find Instagram pods to begin with?

    • francescaferrarinelson@yahoo.co.uk May 15, 2017 / 8:25 pm

Hi Ella, so glad you found my blog, hope you come back here often!! Pods are usually found via Twitter there are always people looking to join pods so thats the best place to start, you can even create your own and add people to it!
