24 Things I’ve Learned In 24 Years!

When I tell people my age I often get the classic, patronising ‘oh you’re still a baby’ remarks that I role my eyes at whilst still trying to sport a smile as not to be too rude, but a lot can happen in 24 years. We all have different life paths and we for sure all encounter different experiences and situations. I’ve met older people that haven’t experienced quite as much as myself and I’ve also met younger people that have experinced way more than I have! Its hard to gauge where you should be in terms of life and learning along the way, but as long as you take something away with you from each experience you’re definitely doing life!

How much can you say you’ve learned in your life time? Here are some of the most important things I think I’ve learned so far…

1. Your past doesn’t have to determine your future.

2. You can only do YOUR best & if thats not enough there is nothing more you can do.

3. Not everyone will like you and thats okay.

4. Things change, so do people, thats also okay.

5. You create your own happiness.

6. Life really is what you make it.

7. Eating too much pizza is probably not the best idea! (Personal fave not that I take my own advice on this one!)

8. No expectations, no dissapointment.

9. Live the life only YOU want to live, not the life thats expected of you.

10. If you let people treat you like crap, they will continue to.

11. Always do what you think is right, but be aware that there are always consequences even if you think you’re doing the right thing.

12. Friends come and go.

13. Trust shouldn’t be given freely.

14. Sometimes its hard not to but try not to judge, you don’t know the whole story.

15. Everything happens for a reason.

16. Take life at your own pace.

17. You can overcome anything with a strong mind and heart.

18. Not everything in life is easy but its almost always worth it.

19. If you’re determined enough, you’ll find a way.

20. If you’re surrounded by unsupportive, negative people cut ties & surround yourself in positivity.

21. Independence is the most important life skill.

22. Be who you really are.

23. Having an ugly heart will do you no favours, be the best version of yourself.

24. Love life in the ups AND the downs!

I’ve definitely learned all of these and more in my 26 years.

  2. Mellissa Williams July 29, 2016 / 8:53 am

Some really valid points here. Do your best as you say and not everyone will like you!

  3. .Sarah. (@OoSerzoO) July 29, 2016 / 9:08 am

This is a great post! It’s all so true! I like number one ‘Your past doesn’t have to determine your future.’ And Life really IS what you make it. I’ve certainly learned all of these in my 31 years! 🙂 Loved this post. xx

    • cheskaaanels July 29, 2016 / 9:20 am

Glad you enjoyed it! 😀 its so true, I ise to regard things like that as just nice things people say to make you feel better without giving it much thought but I’ve learned its all very spot on!! Xox

  4. Charli Bruce July 29, 2016 / 12:44 pm

This is such a true post and I absolutely love it! I hate it when people say to me ‘You’re still young, you’ve still got a whole life to live yet’ I know I still have a whole life in years but I already know I have been through and witnessed more things before I even turned 20 let alone the 28 years I have now compared to what some people will ever go through in their life. I just hate the assumption based on age as to how ‘wise in the world’ you are or what you’ve had to deal with.

FYI eating too much pizza is always a good idea at the time haha! xxx

    • cheskaaanels July 29, 2016 / 1:04 pm

Oh gosh absolutely!! I agree with everything you just said haha there is no way to guess how much someone has experienced so I really hate those patronising comments from older generations! Hahaha eating too much pizza is definitely always a good idea at the time!! Xoxox

  5. Liz Mays July 29, 2016 / 4:44 pm

I’m going to print them out and post them up by my desk. They’re so uplifting!

    • cheskaaanels July 29, 2016 / 5:07 pm

Awwwh I actually feel really honoured by that!! So glad you enjoyed the read! Xoxox

  6. Cassandra Mayers July 29, 2016 / 5:41 pm

These are all so true. Though when your 29 going on 30 you will look at 24 as still young to haha. Wish I was still 24. lol But by what you have learnt sounds like you are in control of your life and if you carry on going the ways of these that you have written then your going to have a great life. I wish I had these to read when I was 24 because I was definetly not in the same mind frame as you are.

    • cheskaaanels July 29, 2016 / 5:43 pm

Oh honestly I feel like a 30 ofd year old, I’m already married, have two children and a house I definitely don’t feel my age haha!! Thanks for your comment so nice to have other peoples perspectives! Xox

  7. Em July 29, 2016 / 8:18 pm

Awwh I’m so pleased you agree and enjoyed it!

  13. Rhian Westbury July 30, 2016 / 1:29 pm

    • cheskaaanels July 30, 2016 / 1:50 pm

Yes absolutely! I admit I was one of those but I’ve recently changed my thought process! Xox

    • cheskaaanels July 30, 2016 / 10:24 pm

Awwh thank you for a lovely comment! Xox

  16. amielizabethblog July 31, 2016 / 6:58 am

Love these. I am 22 and so many of the above are so true to my situtation. x

  17. Ana De Jesus July 31, 2016 / 12:31 pm

Tell me about it; it makes my eyes roll when people dismiss me because of my age. I might be 22 but I have the life experience of someone who is a lot older which is why many people who meet me think I am older even though I look so young.

  18. WhatLauraLoves July 31, 2016 / 11:48 pm

Number 20 really resonates with me. Im sick of having people in my life at shouldnt be there because they don’t care! xxx

    • cheskaaanels July 31, 2016 / 11:49 pm

There we go, get rid and bring in the new!! Xox

  19. Sally Akins (@SallyAkins) August 1, 2016 / 4:06 am

I love this list! It took me 40 years to learn some of these lessons, so you’re ahead of me already 😉

  20. Anosa August 2, 2016 / 7:35 pm

I am 29 and I still get period telling me I am so young but you’re right we all have different paths so experienced different things.

  21. laurahartleyy August 14, 2016 / 6:15 am

No expectations, no disappointment is a really important one for me. I try to implement this all the time as there’s no worse feeling than disappointment!

    • cheskaaanels August 14, 2016 / 7:28 am

Oh absolutely I feel really let down when I’m disappointed so just easier to take the expectations away!

  22. Stephen September 5, 2016 / 12:02 pm

Can you ever really have too much pizza though? Im not so sure 😉

    • cheskaaanels September 5, 2016 / 12:04 pm

Haha this is a thought that does constantly run through my mind!!

  23. Paighton Millington - The Lazy Baker September 5, 2016 / 12:39 pm

Love this post! These are all so true, I’ve learned a good few of these in my 20 years! I’m still trying not to eat a lot of pizza though 😉

    • cheskaaanels September 5, 2016 / 12:47 pm

Haha I’m glad you liked it so much and that you could agree with some of the lessons!! Love a good pizza though!

  24. Zoë IKIWN September 5, 2016 / 12:42 pm

These are all so true. I definitely identify with not letting your past define your future. And the thing about friends coming and going, that’s a tough one to learn and is still very relevant to me now at the age of 33. It’s hard, but recognising that some people are only meant to be in your life for a short time and being okay with that helps so much. Great post! x

    • cheskaaanels September 5, 2016 / 12:49 pm

Oh love your comment! I’m so glad these resonated so well with you! The friend point is a tough one to learn, its not always a nice feeling but its life and some people are just in our lives shortly. I think everything happens for a reason so I’ve learnt to deal with things like that better now and really they don’t bother me like they use to! Xox

    • cheskaaanels September 5, 2016 / 2:43 pm

Absolutely its the biggest life skill you need!! Its alarming how many people don’t know that skill!!

  25. Rachel September 5, 2016 / 3:45 pm

It is true, not everyone will like you and as soon as you can accept that, the better you will feel x

  26. The Indigo Hours September 5, 2016 / 10:04 pm

I love this! It sounds like you’ve acquired plenty of wisdom in your 24 years 🙂

    • cheskaaanels September 5, 2016 / 10:23 pm

Thank you!! Yes I’ve had to grow up fast so wisdom comes with I guess 🙂

  27. Rebecca Smith September 6, 2016 / 10:03 am

Some great life lessons here, you’re very wise x

  28. Jessica Ayun September 6, 2016 / 10:30 am

So much inspiration, dear! My favorite is “You create your own happiness” 🙂

    • cheskaaanels September 6, 2016 / 10:34 am

Oh thats one of the most important!!!

    • cheskaaanels September 8, 2016 / 10:45 pm

Its a damn shame huh!? I like just being me!

  29. LaaLaa (@LaaLaaMonroe) October 25, 2016 / 12:47 pm

LMAO the pizza one is definitely me, it sounds like a great plan until I’m bursting at my stomach seams xo

  30. Sarah Bailey October 25, 2016 / 1:54 pm

It is amazing the things you learn over time as you grow up – I think I’ve bene through most of these. x

    • cheskaaanels October 25, 2016 / 2:18 pm

It is amazing and equally disappointing haha

  31. Sarah | The Urban Wanderer October 25, 2016 / 2:02 pm

Lots of great learning and I’m sure there are more to come too. 🙂 Thanks for sharing them 🙂

  32. London-Unattached.com October 25, 2016 / 2:04 pm

Lovely thoughts and learnings. I wonder if I could do the same (I’m 56). Somehow I doubt it!

  33. Claire October 25, 2016 / 6:50 pm

Love posts like this! I think it’s fun to reflect on where you’ve been, where you are and what might be next, whatever your age.

  34. The Kats Paws October 25, 2016 / 8:43 pm

I think when you get older you realise so much more than you did before. Life’s one long lesson xx

    • cheskaaanels October 25, 2016 / 10:09 pm

I agree!! I was oblivious for so long!

  35. Susanna | Ordinality October 25, 2016 / 9:05 pm

I love these wee round ups and want to do ones for myself every 10 years; it’s just nice to see how you change throughout the years…

I especially love the one about the kind heart. A lot more people should learn that as it’s SO important in life.

    • cheskaaanels October 25, 2016 / 10:08 pm

Ahh yes awesome idea!! We learn so much in life don’t we!?

  36. Miranda (Anosa) October 25, 2016 / 10:05 pm

Lovely list of lessons learned, I must say one thing I knew early on was living for me and not other people brings so much joy to my soul.

  37. Ana De Jesus October 25, 2016 / 10:43 pm

I hate when people tell me I am so young and still have so much to experience. I mean they know nothing about us and what we have been through! Life is a learning curve.

    • cheskaaanels October 26, 2016 / 9:30 am

Haha I’m glad you agree its quite patronising!

  38. Rhian Westbury October 26, 2016 / 9:44 am

All of these are so true. I think you learn over time that it isn’t about the number of friends you have it’s about the quality of those friends x

  39. Dannii October 26, 2016 / 9:54 am

I totally agree that our past does not determine our future. That is what holds people back I think.

  40. Stephanie Merry October 26, 2016 / 12:25 pm

    You’ve learnt a lot in 24 years – I’m still learning these now at 30! x

  41. Teresa at RockspringsCrafts October 26, 2016 / 12:57 pm

While I totally agree with #3 can I also add that you won’t like everybody you meet and that is also totally ok. Took me longer than 24 years to work out that not liking certain people was perfectly acceptable.

  42. dearmummyblog October 26, 2016 / 5:16 pm

My mummy has learnt the hard way that friends come and go, but thats life and sometimes its good to open a new chapter and move on 🙂

    • cheskaaanels October 26, 2016 / 6:12 pm

I agree! Everything happens for a reason.

  43. Jessica October 26, 2016 / 7:00 pm

I totally agree with all those, especially everything happens for a reason.

  44. WhatLauraLoves October 26, 2016 / 7:03 pm

There are so many of these that ring true to me. Its hard growing up but I definitely wish that I knew what I know now when I was younger xxx

    • cheskaaanels October 26, 2016 / 7:35 pm

Oh I’d have to agree with you. Life would have been so much easier knowing these things, however I’d not have listened anyway!

  45. nicol October 26, 2016 / 9:10 pm

i agree with everything you have said! and right now, i’ve adopted those and i’m a lot happier

    • cheskaaanels October 26, 2016 / 9:14 pm

Awwh haha yay! See I feel much better now too!

  46. Ali October 27, 2016 / 9:24 am

Some great life lessons here! I completely agree, some people have easier lives than others so age is just a number not necessarily and indication of your maturity or experience.

  47. cattitudeandco October 27, 2016 / 9:58 am

I love posts like these, some great info here!

  48. secretplussizegoddessblog October 27, 2016 / 4:31 pm

    I love these 24 things – I wish I was as wish at your at 24, but I don’t think I really achieved/realised a lot of these until I hit 40!!! x

    • cheskaaanels October 27, 2016 / 5:07 pm

Well at least you’ve learnt them now! 🙂 xox

  49. glamglitzgloss October 27, 2016 / 9:13 pm

I couldn’t agree more with pretty much all of these! I’d say it’s a shame we don’t learn it sooner but making these mistakes makes us the people we are today but at least you come out learning for the best

  50. MELANIE EDJOURIAN October 27, 2016 / 10:25 pm

I love your outlook on life yo seem to have learnt far more then some in that amount of time.
